The Formica Fundamentals range is a range of vibrant colours of Formica sheets at .7mm thick – that’s less than 1mm thick. Worktops are made of a chipboard core with a laminate surface fitted to the worktops chipboard core and laminate sheets are used to make worktops you will see on the Selffit site. We sell these sheets rolled and boxed for you to use yourself for whatever you need to cover with Formica.
We sell these laminated sheets to photographers as back drops, kitchen companies for covering end panels and larder units with funky colours as well as retail shops counter coverings, camper van enthusiasts and boat builders for covering panels and doors.
Fitting Formica Laminate Sheets
This is not a DIY novice task; you have to be adept at this sort of thing to be able to cut these neatly from the 3050x1300 laminated sheets that they come as. You can glue fundamentals laminate sheets to surfaces to re-cover and add funky style and flair to many surfaces as long as they are flat, clean and smooth – you can’t glue this to tiles and expect it to be flat as it will show any lumps and depressions in the surface. You will need to mount the laminate sheet on a hard board and then fit to the wall, or use 8mm thick splash backs and hob panels that we sell.
This is not the answer to that “I have burnt my worktop, can I use this as a patch?”… You can’t splice it in and you need to do something with the font edge as you can’t bend Formica over the front rolled edge of the existing worktop front profile. You need to know how to fit, cut and work with it, how to use routers and knowing what you need are fairly important unless you have enough spare material to practice on. The normal method employed for gluing Formica Fundamentals sheets is with contact adhesive, so once bonded to the material you’re fitting to, you don’t get a second chance as its permanent! We don’t want to put you off, but we don’t want to see you buy something not fit for the purpose you need it for.
When using adhesives make sure you know what you’re doing and a well ventilated room or workshop with an understanding of what you’re working with.
Don’t be scared of it – but understand it’s not a quick fix or easy make over material for un-even, worn surfaces!
